I sprayed a horsefly about as big as my thumb, with wasp killer (it was harassing us). It flew into our chain link fence post with an audible "dink" noise, bounced off then flew on.

Julia: I'm not quite sure what you mean. They are certainly strong fliers, and they walk around on surfaces the same way that other flies do.

Nasty, nasty things! Just yesterday one landed on my horse's rump while I was riding. My friend was yelling, "He's going to buck! He's going to buck!" Then, "Kill it! Kill it!" Not easy to kill a horse fly on your horse's rump while he's trying to buck it off. Luckily, they are not very quick, at least not compared to a house fly. I was able to smack the evil thing with my bare hand and kill it. My poor horse (who was the intended meal) heaved a huge sigh of relief.

Horses know the second one of these flying devils land on them and they freak out because they know they're going to get a vicious bite. This time, however, I killed it before it bit.

I wasn't thinking about it at the time, but the text behind the fly does make an amusing background (I think it was an article about a financier going to jail, if I'd been thinking about it maybe I could have arranged for some appropriate words to be visible, like "criminal", "theft", or "bloodsucker")

Pity the light wasn't better, though. She was in direct sunlight, and I didn't have the settings correct for the conditions and she ended up kind of washed out.

When I worked as a timber cruiser these guys used to like to land on the mirror of my fold-out compass. I held the compass cupped in my hand and found that if I was quick, I could slam the compass shut and smoosh them. It didn't help anything but it made me a little bit happier.

I hates 'em, I do! I really, really hates 'em! Durned horse flies. I don't think their predatory nature makes up for the stabbings.
