Tiny Jumping Spider

2021 October 3

On September 1, 2021, I had just finished breakfast and was getting ready to clear away my dishes when I noticed this extremely tiny jumping spider on the edge of my cereal bowl. He was just about the size of the head of a pin.

I don’t have a lot to say about him, other than that he was very tiny and cute.

As little more than a baby, I can’t really ID him other than as “a jumping spider”, but since it is apparently traditional to post pictures of spiders in the month of October (“Arachtober”), here he is.

Are the eyes in the back simple shadow / motion detectors or can they do more than that?

The eyes in the back are still bigger than the ones I see on a lot of other spiders, so I think they probably have some imaging capability. Nowhere near as good as the two big binocular eyes in front, obviously, but plenty good enough for peripheral vision.
