Surprise Bees
So, I came home from work on March 12, and S_ says, “We found some bees in the house! We took some pictures for you!”, and I say, “Really? I thought it was still too early for bees to come out,” and Sam was bouncing around excitedly telling me that I had to see the pictures right now, so we turned on the camera and hit the button for the display screen, and this is what I saw:
Ha ha. Very funny, guys. These look to me like Bombus playdoicus, the common playdough bumblebee. Although, I suppose they could be mistaken for Vespula plasticinus, the modeling-clay yellowjacket, except that yellowjackets have black abdomens with yellow stripes, while some bumblebees have yellow abdomens with black stripes.
S_ made this first one with a lot of detailed facial features:
and this next one was Sam’s[1]. I like the pink legs and red eyes, and the cheerful expression.
S_, of course, is a stickler for accuracy, so she made sure that there was a stinger.
So, you see? Even when it is cold out, we still get bugs in the house.

[1] Sam is 4, and this is her first batch of playdough. S_ is somewhat older than that.
